In this day and age you can go to almost any grocery store and buy apples at any time of year. They may be some old mealy red apples or come from halfway around the globe, but if you really want one, they are there. What you can’t find year-round are those lusciously delicious, sweet and tart honey crisp apples.
Every year come fall, I wait with anticipation for the season’s first honey crisps to arrive at the grocery store and farmers market. These gold and crimson streaked beauties are without a doubt my favorite kind of apple. During the short window of time that these apples are available, I’ll often go out of my way and plunk down some extra change for a bag of these tasty treats.
I’ve often though of making a dessert with honey crisps, but it is hard for me to believe that any concoction of sugar, flour and butter could enhance the flavor of these apples. Because they are so good on their own, today’s recipe is a super simple one—please don’t try to substitute any of the ingredients though..!
